S is for Sustainers

It’s baaaacccckkkkk! After a (long) 2-year respite, we were so excited to attend and participate in the 12th annual DMAW Bridge Conference! After thousands of hours of zoom calls, it was fantastic to be back at National Harbor with some of the best, most talented people there are!

We ate. We coffee’ed. And we learned!

Our very own, Erica O’Brien, also presented alongside friends at WETA. This session, “Monthly Giving Brainstorm Blitz: 30+ Ideas in 30 Minutes”, was a jam-packed 75 minutes of recent industry trends, a case study from WETA and an interactive brainstorm where attendees gathered in groups to think through new sustainer upgrade, retention and acquisition strategies. And of course, there were prizes!

Some key takeaways from the session included:

  • While monthly giving has always had an important place in any well-balanced fundraising program, increasing external disruptors have elevated its prominence even more.

  • Small changes can have a big difference! Do not always assume the change has to be massive for an impact to be felt. Sometimes it is an incremental process adjustment, for instance, which can really push your program forward.

  • Do not give up too easy! What did not work the first time might still have potential with a few small tweaks.

  • Do not put all your eggs in one basket! Diversifying your monthly giving acquisition portfolio not only optimizes success, but also reduces risk in an uncertain landscape.

  • It is about options! Today’s donors want to interact with your organization over a variety of channels – so create your own surround sound through cohesive and integrated strategies.

These are just a few of the highlights from our great time together. And now that we are back in person, we look forward to seeing you all soon!
